Summer in the High Tauern national park

Summer in the High Tauern national park

The municipality of Matrei in East Tyrol is situated in the very heart of the High Tauern national park. The highest peaks of Austria, the Grossglockner peak with 3798m.a.s.l. and the Grossvenediger peak with 3674m.a.s.l. are right on your doorstep.

Matrei is the perfect starting point for a leisurely walk or challenging mountaineering tours above 3000m.a.s.l. Explore nature by feet or by bicycle.

Matrei offers something to fit everyone’s tastes: From lovely hikes, e.g. to the gorgeous larch forest called „Zedlacher Paradies“, climbing the highest mountains - over 60 are higher than 3000m.a.s.l. - or trekking from one alpine hut to another enjoying the traditional delicacies.

Furthermore, you have the possibility to book professional mountain guides who lead you safe to the most exciting alpine places or to participate in guided excursions discovering the fauna and flora led by the rangers of the High Tauern national park.

Unspoilt nature and marvellous countryside maintained by mountain farmers are the two faces of the High Tauern national park. It is by far the largest protected area in the Alpine Arc with 1.856 km² and stretches across untouched nature as glaciers, wild cliff walls and forests and the alpine pastures – conserved and maintained over centuries by the troublesome and hard work of the mountain farmers.
